As we move into spring, we want to help our residents stay healthy and protected. COVID-19 is still with us, and for those at higher risk, a “booster” dose helps top up your protection.

Those who can get a spring vaccination include people aged 75 and over (by 30 June 2026), people with a weakened immune system, and residents of care homes for older adults. Eligible people can book their spring vaccine from 6 April, and appointments start from 13 April.

Who can get the spring booster?

  • The booster is offered to people who are most likely to get seriously ill from the virus. You are eligible if you are:
  • Aged 75 or over (or if you turn 75 by 30 June 2026)
  • Living in a care home for older adults
  • Aged 6 months or over with a weakened immune system (for example, due to a health condition or treatment like chemotherapy).

Why should I get the booster?

  • Protection from previous doses or infections fades over time. Viruses can also change. Getting this extra dose:
  • Reduces your risk of getting very poorly
  • Helps you recover faster if you do catch it
  • Reduces the chance of needing to go to hospital.

How to get your vaccination

The NHS will write to people to remind those eligible that they can get the vaccine, but bookings can be made at any time.

If you are eligible, the best way to get your vaccine is by booking online via the National Booking System, NHS app or by calling 119 for free.

The spring booster may be given at the same time as the RSV vaccine for eligible groups.

Sarah Bellars, chief nursing officer at Thames Valley ICB, which covers Berkshire, Buckinghamshire and Oxfordshire, said: “The vaccine helps provide protection against the Covid virus and helps reduce the risk of catching and spreading the illness, or being hospitalised.

“Previous immunity from the virus can wane so it is important for those who are at higher risk to top up their protection. Evidence shows those who have received a Covid jab are 40 per cent less likely to be admitted to hospital with the virus in the following two months.

“We urge patients who are eligible to book their appointment and get their spring jab without delay to help keep them well.”

What you need to know

Please try to leave at least six months since your last COVID-19 dose. If you have any questions about whether you should have the vaccine, speak to your local pharmacist or your specialist team.
